After experiencing 'mpv' I will never go back to MPlayerX. It is highly configurable if you don't mind reading the docs and editing a config file. It has many more features than command-line 'mplayer', and is an app, so you can open files from Finder in it. It handles playlists, or you can select a bunch of videos and open them all, like a playlist, with 'CMD-o'.
It loads immediately, unlike MPlayerX, which takes at least a minute to load a video.
It can be used ti play VideoCD, SVCD or DVD too. It supports MPEG/VOB, AVI, OGG, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, Real Media or DivX. It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI. 5KPlayer is a new-style free media player for Mac OS as all-in-one HD video/music/DVD player, AirPlay/DLNA streamer and free online video/music downloader. MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation). I looked for and found a much better alternative called 'mpv', which is based on 'mplayer', but has many more features. MPlayer is multiplatform, and that allows you to use it on Windows, Mac and Linux. MPlayerX is armed by FFmpeg and MPlayer, which means it could handle any media format in the world without extra plug-ins or codec packages. But when I found that the latest version from the developer at codeplex, the same version offered on this site (which has now been replaced by the safe version from sourceforge), contained 16 out of 45 malware positives at Virustotal, that was it. It always took a full minute to open even the smallest video file. Therefore, whether you have downloaded videos, or downloaded flash videos from other sites, or recorded videos with your camcorder, you can playback them all with this video player. You can use it to playback videos in MP4/AVI/MKV/MOV/FLV/WMV and other formats smoothly. I had been using MPlayerX for years and never really liked it. Free Mac Media Player is the best video player for Mac users.
